Letter to Parents
Spring Term in the Balloon Room
January 2010
Dear Parents.
Welcome back. I hope you all had a terrific Christmas. We had such a fantastic end to last term with the wonderful production of ‘Cinders’. I was so proud of the children, goodness knows how you parents felt.
Below are a few details about what we will be up to this term.
Swimming
We have been told that Golden Lane swimming pool will be ready for our use from the start of term. We will re-arrange The Upper House Swimming Gala on one Friday this term, date to be advised. On Friday 29th January we have been invited to participate in The City of London Primary School’s Swimming Gala. We will let you know shortly if your child has been selected for this event. Parents are allowed to attend this event.
Writing Pens
Pen licences are given to pupils once we feel they are producing the best handwriting they can. Once they have this licence they are free to use a pen for all written work. They may use their own or use classroom pens. Be warned…. licences can be taken back!!!
Reading
At the start of this term all children will be choosing novels from our shelves. We do ask that children read a book per week, but this is obviously flexible dependent upon the length of book and their ability.
THIS TERM’S TOPICS
History
We have a superb topic for this term: World War I. The class will be studying areas such as why the war began, trench warfare, the major battles, women in the war and the casualties. During this course we will set the children a mini-assignment in which they will have to research either an air or sea battle. Last term’s projects were superb and we fully appreciate your support with this work.
Geography
Australasia is our topic. We will be studying the human and physical geography of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. If you have any photographs, souvenirs etc. that would enhance our study, they would be most appreciated.
Science
The children will be looking at Life Cycles. The life cycles of humans, frogs, insects and plants will be covered.
Also, could we please have a photograph of your child as a baby for a classroom display?
Literacy
Traditional tales, fables, myths and legends are our topics for fiction. Any books from home related to these topics would be useful. For non-fiction we are looking at explanations.
Numeracy
Multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, sequences, factors, area and measurement will all be covered this term.
PSHE
To gain a greater understanding of current affairs, the children will be asked to choose a relevant topic. They will then research this with two other pupils, ready to present it to the class. Each week we will choose three children to do this. We will let you know when it is your child’s turn.
Finally, here’s to another marvellous term. Luke and I feel very lucky to be teaching such a great bunch of children.
Robert
