Letter to Parents - January 2012

Dear Parents,

Welcome back! I hope you had a great Christmas holiday and are looking forward to all the new things we have this term. Below are the topics we will be covering in humanities and other important information about what we will be getting up to.

History

Spring 1 Homes in the Past
We will explore homes through history, particularly in Victorian times, and compare them to homes today, looking at their purposes and features. We will be visiting the Geffrye Museum in London to look inside period homes from 1600 to present day.

Spring 2 Vikings
We will be learning about the Vikings in Britain, who they were and where they came from.

Science

Spring 1 – Electricity

Spring 2 – Plants and Animals

Geography  - Where in the World is Barnaby Bear?
We will be following Barnaby Bear’s adventures at home and abroad. He will be visiting a different country every week for us to learn about.

It would be very helpful if your child would like to bring in things to do with our topics such as books, artefacts or posters. Please make sure it is labelled with your child’s name.

Other information about the Yellow Room:

  • Spelling tests will take place every Friday morning (starting week of 9th January).
  • P.E. has been changed and is now every Thursday at Golden Lane.  All children are required to wear suitable clothing and shoes. Trainers or plimsolls are perfect.
  • The children borrow a library book to read at home and this is changed fortnightly on Fridays.
  • Continuing from last term, you will receive your children’s spelling book containing their results every Friday. Please make sure they are back in their folders on Monday.

SWIMMING
Exciting news for the Yellows – we start swimming lessons! Lessons should begin in February once Golden Lane Leisure Centre has reopened. I will let you know in advance as to the exact date of when we start and will put a label in your child’s homework diary.

Homework diaries (reading records) are used as a form of communication for parents, so please feel free to inform me of any necessary information or ask any questions you may have.

Thank you for your continued support,

Philippa
