English

Our overall aim in English is to foster a love of reading and language.

Pupils are exposed to a wide range of literature and are therefore able to explore a variety of writing styles. Children are taught to write for many different purposes and learn the appropriate vocabulary and structure for each e.g. scripts, advertisements, letters, creative writing and factual accounts. Emphasis is placed on technical aspects such as punctuation, grammar, spelling and correct letter formation.

Confidence in expressing ideas and opinions is encouraged throughout the school. This starts in the Green Room with ‘Show and Tell' and continues throughout the school with debates and election speeches for captains, and finishes with Star Room children showing prospective parents around the school. Drama lessons also allow children to work together and develop the ability to listen to others and share ideas and opinions.

Reading is considered by us to be the oxygen for learning. On entering the school, books will be introduced as an integral part of learning.

The Jolly Phonics scheme is followed in the Green and Red Rooms and children are introduced to reading books as and when they are assessed as ready. Once a child starts reading, a book is taken home each night and is changed on a daily basis. We do not follow one set reading scheme, and so introduce the children to a wide variety of authors and styles in order to keep them enthused about reading.

Children's progress is monitored regularly and discussed with parents so that any difficulties are recognised and appropriate action is taken. This may involve an assessment from our dyslexic support teacher, joining a booster group, or in one-to-one help.
